Karl takes pride of Place

21/ 6/2007

KARL Place, a brickwork and construction student at Hopwood Hall College, won the Senior Novice National ABA Title of England last weekend at HMS Nelson Royal Navy in Portsmouth.

The construction student took the title in style with a devastating knockout of his more experienced opponent, Blain Sedgworth, from the Lewisey Amateur Boxing Club.

Karl, pictured, gave a master class in counter-punching throughout the first three rounds of the contest, hitting Sedgworth with clever shots each time his opponent attacked.

His superior footwork and hand speed had the audience on their feet clapping the skill of the Hopwood fighter.

In the fourth round his tactics changed and Karl delivered power shots on the counter with devastating effect. A left hook delivered at high speed was landed after Karl slipped a right cross from Sedgworth.

The Lewisey boxer was out for the count before he hit the canvas and after being given time to recover the boxer took the applause of the crowd. Place was awarded the contest by a knockout decision.

This young boxer is a real prospect for the future; committed and tenacious are just a few words to describe this young hopeful.
