ROCHDALE Hornets' community officer Darren Rogers hailed last week's junior rugby tournament an outstanding success and can't wait for the next one.

Rogers organised the competition between 11 schools, some of them from Middleton.

It attracted more than 300 children, teachers and parents.

The contest was held before Hornets' clash with Doncaster Lakers at Spotland

The final was played during the half time interval, with All Souls (Heywood) running out the winners.

The Heywood school team was unbeaten after scoring 13 tries and, remarkably, conceding none, on their way to the top.

Rogers said: "The event was a great success for us.

"I've had great feedback from teachers, youngsters and parents alike who've all said what a great community event it was.

"It was great to have schools from ethnic minority catchment areas coming along to Spotland and getting involved in the game.

"I'd like to thank all those involved in putting it together and ensuring everything ran smoothly.

"Hopefully the tournament will have been the first of many, and I'm hoping to attract lots more schools to take part in our next venture."

Schools involved were: All Souls (Heywood), St Johns (Thornham), Ashfield Valley, Brimrod Primary, St Edward's, Castleton (three teams); Marland Hill; Castleton Primary; Moorhouse Primary, Milnrow; Alkrington Moss, Boarshaw, Little Heaton, Middleton.
