McDonagh's storming show

26/ 4/2007

THOMAS McDonagh gave a brilliant and thrilling display when he outpointed tough Ukrainian Vladamir Borovsky in a contest at the Jarvis Piccadilly Hotel.

This was a six-round warm-up for the Collyhurst and Moston camp fighter who faces a British title eliminator against Leicester's Martin Conception, in London, on 26 May.

The dinner-suited guests were enthralled by the sheer class of the ever popular McDonagh as he cut out the showboating and got down to action.

The masterful way he hooked off his left jab, and the way in which he delivered rib-bending body punches was a sight to behold.

Full marks to Borovsky who took everything and fought back valiantly, but this was the Storm Boy at his most sensational.

It was a shut-out on referee Stephen Gray's scorecard.

Collyhurst and Moston coach Brian Hughes said: "Thomas showed he is a champion in waiting."

Scott Quigg, one of the newest teenagers at the Collyhurst and Moston Academy, fought the more experienced Garry Shields from Chester.

This was a fast paced open contest, with the older boxer trying to dominate.

But before the end of the first round fight fans knew Quigg was certainly one to be reckoned with.

He was quicker and more skilful than his opponent, punched crisper, and showed maturity beyond his years.

The C and M coaching staff were well pleased with his start and quietly believe he is a great prospect.

Paul DeSilva, a light heavyweight, met Tony Booth from Hull.

Booth was a veteran of more than 100 fights, but he found DeSilva too cunning and fast for him.

It was an absorbing contest, with the Hull man trying to land one big haymaker.

DeSilva boxed beautifully to win clearly on points.
