World medals for Spartans

TWO fighters from Middleton's Spartan club, sponsored by Archer Blinds, won bronze medals in the Muay Thai amateur world championships held in Bangkok.
John Dennis (18) and Brent Tierney represented England.
Tierney (above left) gained valuable experience in his first international and beat fighters from Germany and Palestine, despite being pushed to the limit, on his way to the semi-finals.
Dennis's defeat in his semi-final was hotly disputed.
His ratio of punches was three to one against a Russian opponent, but the Russian was declared the winner.
In his previous bout Dennis had beaten the hot favourite from Belarus.
Dennis (above right) will fight for the European amateur title in August. Tierney will fight on the same bill for an area or British title.
