THE Middleton Sports Apprenticeship Scheme has been launched offering people an opportunity to gain experience, qualifications and employment in the leisure industry.

The scheme is a result of funding acquired from Middleton Fair Shares programme.

Recruitment for the scheme will commence late October, where 12 apprentices will be selected to start the scheme in January 2007.

The scheme will involve a core of training consisting of: Sports Coach UK workshops; Level 1 Award in Community Sports Leadership; First Aid; Customers Care; Work Experience in various leisure and recreation placements

The apprentices themselves will decide the rest of the apprenticeship structure. For example one apprentice may want to specialise in coaching, therefore will concentrate on getting level 1 coaching award. Another apprentice may want to be a gym instructor/personal trainer so will pursue the relevant qualifications and experience to achieve that.

The new project 'Sports Apprenticeship Scheme' is funded through the Middleton Fair Shares Programme. The grant was achieved to help increase the provision of local qualified and experienced personnel to community based sports clubs, community groups, and sports facilities in the borough.

This will provide opportunities for 12 individuals aged 16-24 from Middleton to gain experience and training in the leisure industry.

The Sports Apprenticeship Scheme hopes to provide opportunities for local individuals to progress to full time employment, full/part time further education and/or develop lasting links with the local sporting community.

The Project will consist of a Sports Apprenticeship Project Officer who will recruit 12 apprentices. Apprentices will be developed and mentored in sporting areas of their personal interests; attending courses and workshops, gaining qualifications, and work placements in the local sporting community.

Anyone interested in becoming a sports apprentice or for further information contact David Butterworth on (01706) 756606 or david.butterworth@rochdale.gov.uk.
