Middleton Juniors 5

PHOENIX were no match for Middleton Juniors' under 15s who started this Rochdale and Oldham Youth League evening match with some flowing football.

Unfortunately good football does not always lead to goals, and in spite of the pressure chances were not taken. Phoenix, on the other hand, struggled against a resolute Juniors' defence.

Once the first goal had come, after 20 minutes, more rapidly followed, and Juniors were a well deserved three up at half time.

Two more goals came as the game faded along with the light.

Scorers were Orford (2) Kilroy, Odjeudry and Heapy.

Pearson Juniors 1

JUNIORS set about their task with a passion and scored three inside 20 minutes.

Credit must go to Pearson's who kept on looking for goals.

Juniors looked uncertain defensively, but when Pearson's did break through they came up against the rock that is Juniors' increasingly confident keeper Dec McCarrick.

McCarrick has become an accomplished keeper, and it was his positional play and command of his defence, as well as spectacular flying saves, which stopped Pearson's gaining a foothold.

As Juniors piled on the goals the game became less competitive.

Scorers were Whitehouse (3), Ryder, Heapy, Orford, Wilson and J Orford.
