Northside pair’s summer success

20/ 7/2006

NORTHSIDE boxers Anthony Leak and Kallum De'ath have enjoyed a busy and successful time in the ring of late.

Leak, returned from Germany after clinching a silver medal in the prestigious Chemintz Cup and, after a two-week rest, he was selected by England for a round-robin tournament in Dublin.

Boxers from England, France, Ireland and Germany took part.

The skilful Northside lad moved up from 52k to 54k, but he wasn't fazed as he went on to win all three of his bouts.

On Friday in a close contest he outpointed his Irish opponent, Neil McBride 6-5.

The following day, he was in dominant mood, switching from orthodox to southpaw to overcome another home boxer, Michael Fitzpatrick 13-6.

And, on Sunday, Leak's fitness shone through as he turned on the style to beat German fighter Dieter Wolfer 13-5.

The 15-year-old's record now stands at 39 wins from 54 fights.

De'ath too was in top form when he fought in the Four Nations Junior Championship in Liverpool.

There was some tremendous competition in an age group which could potentially be the representative base for their respective nations at the Olympics in London in 2012.

De'ath demonstrated why he is so highly rated by those in the know, beating Ireland's Danny Burns in the final 8-4, to take the gold medal.

He has now won 50 of his 57 fights.
