THE weather was cold, but the rugby was hot in the Junior Tag Festival held at Castleton Sports Centre.

The event was the culmination of six-week's coaching in 20 schools throughout the borough, organised by the community sports team and sponsored by Rochdale Hornets.

Under the watchful eye of coaches Phil Cantillon, Jane Sheridan and Mohammed Zarafet pupils in Years 5 and 6 honed their rugby league skills, and six schools were involved in the final competition - St Mary's (Langley), Alice Ingham, Sandbrook Primary, Deeplish Primary, and a combined St Mary's/All Saints team.

Games were six-a-side with at least two girls per team on the pitch at all times.

The Langley team won four and drew one of their five games to edge out Sandbrook Park and take first place, with three wins and two draws, to take first place.

Karen Reynolds, commercial director of Rochdale Honets, said: "We are committed to supporting events in the borough which help children to be healthy and happy."

Phil Cantillon added: "The programme has been a great success thanks to the hard work of all involved."
