Clares rise to cup challenge

BLACKLEY Alliance were given a run for their money when they met St Clares in a Middleton Sunday League HPS Challenge Shield match.

The Premier Division leaders looked on a banker home win against a team without a victory to its name this season, but all was not plain sailing as Clares bagged three goals in reply to the four from Alliance.

Gibbons (2), Bennett and Lees netted for Alliance. Clares' goals came from Ward (2) and Reni.

Another match to produce seven goals was the tie between Old David and Higher Blackley RBL.

In this case it was visitors RBL who edged a win thanks to strikes from Coogan (3) and Kilroy. Littler (2) and McClean netted for Old David.

Radclyffe Arms were 5-3 away winners against Alliance.

Lomas bagged a couple as VASA beat Oddfellows 6-2 in a Geoff Allen Memorial Trophy tie. Wykes notched both for the losers.

Lister and Hall found the net to give Hebers a 2-1 away success over Crown Inn for whom Smith scored.

Blackley Rangers strolled to a 4-0 away win over Tavern in the John Matthews Trophy.

Bricklayers Arms were also away winners, but they didn't have matters as easy. Barber and Sturrock saw them to a 2-1 success.

Thomas (3), Cawley, Sutherland, Boal and Derbyshire saw Cardinal Villa to a 7-0 Division One home win over Royal Oak.

Red Barn beat Old Cock 3-2 thanks to goals from Hutton (2) and Wilson. Greenwood and Vayro replied.
