Tournament success for B team

ROCHDALE Goalball Club started their season with a bang last Saturday in the BBS/Leicester VISTA Tournament.

The B team of Ray Castle, Sally Castle, Emma Castle and Yvonne Grindrod, under the guidance of coach Martin Howarth, had a superb day and deservedly won the development section.

Resounding victories over Hampshire B (10-4) and Hampshire C (10-3) gave Rochdale what should have been an unassailable lead, but their final game against old rivals Moor End nearly proved their undoing.

The game was hard fought and the final score of 8-8 was far too close for comfort. But the result was enough to ensure the title by one point.

A somewhat depleted Rochdale A team was less successful.

They battled hard and there were some outstanding individual performances, but they were unable to record a win on the day.

The squad of Emma Jones, Martin Howarth, Sarah Kelly and Paul Jackson finished fourth in the experienced section and earned praise for their commitment and effort.

Rochdale's player of the day award went to Paul Jackson for his enthusiasm and consistent high-level performance, but a special mention is reserved for Sarah Kelly who rediscovered her appetite for the game and twice scored on her debut for the experienced squad.
