All are stars in Pop Stars tournament

THE fifth annual small-sided football event, sponsored by Premier Foods and known as the Middleton Mini Pop Stars Tournament, proved another big success.

The under sevens played for show only as FA regulations deem there can be no league or knockouts for that age group.

Bridge Colts A won the under eights contest with Polaris, from Merseyside, as runners-up.

Middleton Boys reached the under nines final in which they beat Moston Juniors A.

Moston's under 10s ensured the club continued its excellent record in developing winning teams by beating Bridge Colts A on penalties in the final.

Alkrington B were pipped 1-0 by Broadway Celtic in the under 11s final.

Broadway Celtic also won the under 12s title. They overcame a spirited Wardle Warriors' B team.

Middleton Colts triumphed in the under 13s, beating Sarsons 3-0.

Colts' under 14s C team also reached a final, but Moston Boys beat them 3-0.

Trophy holders St Clares reached the final of the under 15s contest only to lose 1-0 to Middleton Rangers.

An amazing 275 goals were scored over the two days. But there was many a 0-0 draw which highlighted the skill and agility of the goalkeepers.

The tournament could not have run without the tireless efforts of Anne Marshall and her army of volunteers along with the regular band of referees who give up their time for nothing.

The contribution of the many sponsors was invaluable.
