Dean holds his nerve

MOSTON progressed to the second round of the Winkley Wood Challenge Cup after defeating Ashton in a bowl-out - the cricket equivalent of the penalty shoot-out.

The heavens opened 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the game and an hour later, with the pitch almost under water, the umpires decided the only way to achieve a result was with a bowl out.

After the 11 players of each team had tried their luck the score was 2-2.

Dean Wolstenholme and Russ Iddon hit for Moston.

So it became sudden death.

Dean Wolstenholme insisted he was the man who could handle the pressure and went first.

His confident manner proved correct as he hit the stumps for the second time.

Ashton captain Khalid had to hit to keep his side in the cup, but just like Paul Scholes later in the day his nerve didn't hold and his delivery sailed over the stumps.

This weekend, at Chadderton Fold, Moston entertain Salford-based Trinity.
