Golden day for winning boxers
28/ 4/2005
BOXING: FIVE local lads enjoyed success in the third Bolton Box Cup.
Clubs from all the home nations, and Denmark, had fighters in action.
James Barker (Northside) had a straight final. He met Gary Holloway, this year's Scottish national champion.
Barker dominated from the opening bell and used his superior footwork and counter punching to score a unanimous point's verdict.
Mark Heffron (Boarshaw) also won a gold medal by beating C O'Brian of Gemini ABC.
This was a great win for Heffron who avenged a points defeat from last season.
Heffron scored freely with uppercuts and was named best junior boxer of the tournament.
Chas Burton (Boarshaw) took a gold medal by beating John Conway of Northside. Burton made his height and reach advantage count as he cleverly counter-punched.
Alex Rutter (Boarshaw) showed maturity beyond his years and gave an excellent performance. A variety of shots and superb footwork baffled his Irish opponent in the final.
Darrel Sharp (Boarshaw) lost in his final to Chris Stukins of Scotland. It was only his second contest, and Sharp gave a performance to be proud of. It was very close on points.
