Gloves come off for golden titles

BOARSHAW Amateur Boxing Club has three national champions following last weekend's Golden Gloves finals in Gateshead.

Ronnie Heffron, Grant Brown and Zac Burton won titles at their respective levels in the contest formerly known as the national schoolboys knockout.

Heffron, who won a schoolboys title last year, beat former national champion Charlie Jacobs of Harwich.

Overall it was a comfortable win for Heffron who went close to the 15-points mark which would have meant the bout being stopped in his favour.

Brown's fight was much closer, but full marks to the Boarshaw lad who stuck to his plan and followed instructions to the letter.

The youngest winner of the trio, all trained by Ben Lancaster, was Zac Burton who looks a big prospect for the future.

Heffron's father Tommy was delighted with the win and praised the coaches at Hopwood Hall Boxing Academy who had allowed Ronnie to spar there for a couple of weeks.
