MIDDLETON'S Mark Holden reached the final of the Carlsberg Oldham Open which was held at the Tara Leisure Centre last weekend.
But he had to settle for runners-up spot after being beaten 4-2 by Stockport's Kevin Weir.
Steve Shaw reached the last four stage before going down 4-2 to the eventual champion.
By being in the last four Holden and Shaw qualified for the world champions' challenge which followed the Open. Holden went down 4-2 to eventual champion Eric Bristow. Shaw lost 4-0 to Dennis Priestley.
There was some great throwing last week in the Middleton Men's Thursday League.
Mick Murphy contributed to the 4-3 win for Woodside WMC over Kings Arms with a 14-darter.
It was only the second defeat suffered by Kings this season.
Second placed Boarshaw WMC beat third placed Joiners 5-2. Joiners' Barry Nevison also registered a 14-darter.
Dave Roberts went out in 14 as Whitehouse beat Cotton Tree by the odd game in seven, while Geoff Morson's 13-dart leg was only a consolation for Railway and Linnet who were beaten 4-3 by White Hart.
The top two in the Moston SS League, Embassy and VASA, clash this week.
