Abacus bow out of cup despite keeper’s penalty saves

20/ 1/2005

ABACUS Media went out of the Lancashire and Cheshire League's cup, beaten 2-1 on penalties by Old Ashtonians.

Abacus were under pressure in the opening 20 minutes but led by man-of-the-match Nick Harrison they stood firm.

As the game progressed Abacus got more into the game and only some fine saves by the Ashton keeper kept it goal-less.

Ashton hit a post with a fine volley early in the second half, but their defence was stretched as Abacus twice went close.

Craig Carty made two excellent saves in the shoot-out, but the Ashton keeper saved three kicks.

Abacus seconds made cup progress with a 2-1 win over Old Standians.

Neil Jones fired Media into the lead and they hung on to their advantage, thanks to good defending, until the hour mark. A great goal by Mike Barlow settled the tie in favour of Abacus.

  • MIDDLETON Colts under eights were 2-1 winners over Rossendale.

Colts began strongly and created a number of chances. They took the lead just before the break with a well taken goal from Travis Livesey.

Rossendale gained the upper hand in the second half and notched a good equaliser.

But Joe Cornford's well worked effort gave his team victory.

Jordan Burton was named player-of-the-match.

  • MIDDLETON Colts under 13s played a strong Chadderton side and had to put in a gritty performance to earn their 3-0 victory.

Colts took the lead when Burgone slid a pass through for Matthew Kosylo to round the keeper and slot home. Kosylo added his second minutes before half-time.

Colts started the second half brightly and were steady throughout, but they couldn't capitalise until Louis Ellis hit a 20-yarder into a top corner.

The player-of-the-match, selected by sponsors The Car Shop, was Danny Burgone.

  • MANCHESTER YFC under 14s stormed to a 6-0 win over Woodbank in the Bury and Radcliffe League.

They took the lead after four minutes when Sam Freakes outsprinted defenders to hit a shot across the keeper and into the net.

It became 2-0 when Ossy Osawe drew the keeper and slotted home.

The second half was one-way traffic and Woodbank had nothing to offer.

Barry Foster and Osawe made it 4-0 and Jake Hardicre blasted in number five.

With seconds left Freakes rounded off the scoring for the new table-toppers.
