Abacus expand

27/ 8/2004

A MIDDLETON football club has taken the decision to expand, establish a second team, and gain the FA Charter Mark.

Abacus Media FC, the only Saturday football club based at Bowlee playing fields, won promotion to the Lancashire and Cheshire League's Division Three this year following an eight-match winning streak.

The lads, most of whom are local, also reached the quarter-finals of the Manchester Amateur Cup.

Now the club is looking to gain the charter mark, which would enable the committee to apply for funding, as well as raise their own money to establish their own ground.

Club secretary and first team manager John Rees said: "There are some very good teams in this league, but the lads are working hard in training, and we're confident we can put on a decent charge and give a good account of ourselves in both divisions.

"I'm very pleased with the progress of some of the younger players, but we're always looking to add quality players to our teams.

"The club prides itself on a family, friendly atmosphere and, thanks to Gary Greene and his staff, we have excellent facilties at Bowlee."

Anyone who would like to join the club for a training session at St Mary's new Astroturf pitch should contact Gary on 0161 281 5774.
