Bowlers honour memory of Tony
19/ 8/2004
FRIENDS, family and colleagues of a popular Middleton bowler turned out in force for the 2004 Tony Holland Memorial Trophy tournament last weekend.
Sixty-four players descended on the Conservative Club green and Ged Smedley took the honours with a win over Darren Wardle in the final.
The beaten semi-finalists were involved in a third-place play-off and Gary Coverdale overcame Steve Copeland.
The first competition was held last year as a tribute to Tony who died at the age of 62. The contest has now become a major event on the Middleton bowling calendar.
Tony was a member of the Tonge, Middleton Conservative, and Archer bowling clubs. His son Jason was among the entrants in Saturday's event which was sponsored by Manchester Cable Construction.
