Rugby League

HOPWOOD Hall College's newly formed rugby league team played its first fixtures this week, at a rugby festival in Golborne.

The team is made up of Year Seven and Eight students from Middleton and Heywood.

The first game was against a very strong Golborne Parkside team. Hopwood were under pressure for most of the first half. But they quickly gelled and improved as the match went on, earning the respect of their more experienced opponents.

The second game was more even, against another AGMA-funded side from Bolton.

Hopwood took a hold of the match with tries from Daniel Hall and Grant Fitton. Both were converted by Nathan Hoyle.

The Hornets are looking to arrange another AGMA event in June and will be inviting teams from around the region. They will also be Rochdale Borough representatives in the Greater Manchester Youth Games which will be held in Bolton on 13 June.

Places are still available in the squad and any interested players should attend the squad's next training session at the College, 10.30am on Sunday.
