Canada bound

A TALENTED young player from Boarshaw has been chosen to represent his country in Canada.

Daniel Astley, 16, took up the sport of inline roller hockey at the age of nine after being invited to try out with Middleton Demons.

He signed for Demons at under 10 level and has since progressed through to the senior team, playing in the Greater Manchester Inline Hockey League.

Coaches for the national squad spotted Daniel, a defender, when he took his place in the senior team.

They invited him to try out for the Great Britain squad, with a view to competing in the Can-AM Cup this summer.

Daniel and his Great Britain team-mates, including fellow Demons Matthew Scott, Brad O'Rourke and Ashley Price will cross the Atlantic at the end of June.

They hope local businesses can help with their travel and accommodation expenses.

The estimated cost to each player is around £1,000, and with little or no financial help available from grants, the youngsters are appealing for the backing of the town's private sector to help in any way they can.
