Rochdale Sports Awards 2003
THE ROCHDALE Sports Awards 2003 saw the cream of the borough's coaches, competitors, clubs and committed volunteers take a bow for their efforts over the previous 12 months at Rochdale Cricket Club last Wednesday night.
Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Sultan Ali, handed out certificates to those nominated across six categories - performer, club, coach, special recognition, young volunteer and young disabled achiever.
He then dished out the trophies for the winners and those highly commended.
Middleton's Emma Jones received one of the top awards.
To demonstrate the diversity of sport in Rochdale, nine-year-old Harriet Brooks was commended for her achievements with Sparks Gymnastics Club, while Ken Russell, 89, was honoured for his sterling 44 years service with Rochdale Company of Archers.
Said Councillor Ali: "It's a privilege to be here tonight and recognise all the achievements the whole borough has made in the world of sport."
"I'd like to thank you all for your efforts, you make me so very proud."
