Midfield star proves a barnstormer

22/10/2003

Middleton Boys 5
Halebarns B 0

MIDDLETON under 12s made it look easy as they progressed to the second round of the County Cup, beating Halebarns B 5-0 at Bowlee.

In a one-sided contest Boys controlled the game from the off. Kieran McCarthy chased and harried every ball and proved he is one of the best midfielders in the league.

Goalkeeper Callum Jackson had very little to do and swept up a few stray passes on his 18 yard line.

With a comfortable cushion of three goals at half time, thanks to strikes from Howell (2) and Hogan, Middleton made a few changes.

They moved left-back Shaun Cannon to midfield and changed goalkeeper Jackson for Jordan Hindley, an ex-City starlet at under sevens.

Jackson capped a good second half performance by thundering a 45th minute penalty past a sorry Halebarns' goalkeeper.

Middleton's other goal came from freekick specialist Anthony Hoolickin who scored for the fourth game in a row with a lofted and somewhat speculative shot from 20 yards.

Middleton thoroughly deserved their win and played with a relaxed and stylish manner.

Player of the match was McCarthy for his never-say-die spirit.
