World Games chance for college fighter

15/10/2003

A TEENAGE boxer has been selected to compete in the World Student Games.

Joseph Murray, who attends Hopwood Hall College's Boxing Academy, was named as part of a three-man team chosen to represent UK boxers at the Games in Italy on 7 November.

He said: "I was very surprised and excited when I found out. I think I've got a good chance and hopefully I'll win. The selection of the 16-year-old, who also fights for Boarshaw Boxing Club, completes a superb year for the youngster following his gold medal at the Junior Olympics this summer and triumphs in the Schoolboy Championships and Four Nations competitions.

Hopwood Hall's chief boxing coach Jimmy Barker said: "The lad has done a lot this year and deserves everything he gets. It is a massive achievement for him and for the college."

Jimmy added that his young protege, who is also studying a hospitality and catering course at the college, has not let his coursework slip to make way for his training.

"His tutors have been telling me how well he is doing," he said. "He puts 100 per cent into everything he does."
