Carlton going up in the world

28/ 8/2003

CARLTON ensured themselves of a quick return to the top flight when they beat Simpson Memorial 9-6 in a Middleton Bowls League B Division match.

Third placed Rhodes picked up only five points from their home match against Prestwich which means Carlton are assured of a top two finish.

Noel Hogan (21-6) was one of six winners in Carlton's 180-160 aggregate success.

Prestwich took the aggregate at Rhodes by two chalks, thanks in part to Garth Moore's 21-5 win.

Middleton Con A gave their promotion chances a boost in the C Division match against Boarshaw WMC. A 21-6 win by Robert Mills helped his team to a 193-160 aggregate win.

Tonge A had eight winners as they beat Brassey 15-2 in an A Division match.

George Smedley (21-5) was the best winner as Tonge won 189-158.

Brassey's Darren Wardle and Dave Crabtree won the pairs knockout played at Whitehouse.

They struggled to win their quarter-final 21-20 against Clough's Jimmy and nine-year-old James Hynes. But they easily beat Norman Tyson and Leon Hill 21-8 in the final.
