New professional for Moonrakers

MIDDLETON Cricket Club have signed Sajith Fernando as professional for next season.

He will replace Ruvin Peiris who has missed much of this season due to injury.

Fernando has been professional with Werneth for a couple of seasons. Last term the left-handed batsman scored 1489 runs and took 93 wickets. This season, up to last weekend, he had scored 816 runs and taken 72 wickets with his right-arm off-spin.

Peiris recently had an operation to repair cruciate ligament damage and it was hoped he would be fit enough to continue as professional for next season.

Middleton chairman John Burton said: "We love Ruvin to bits and feel he has done a tremendous job for us both in matches and in coaching. But because of the uncertainty regarding his injury we had to speed things up and get someone signed."
