Sporting kids play their part in Youth Games extravaganza

19/ 6/2003

THE TOWN'S youngsters flew the flag for Rochdale during two days of sun, fun and sporting success at the Greater Manchester Youth Games in Bolton.

The local heroes lined up alongside and against more than 4,000 competitors from the nine other boroughs in 15 sports at Bolton Arena, St Joseph's RC and Sports College and Horwich Leisure Centre to hit, kick, tackle, spike, bowl, run, throw and swim at the biggest event in the Games' history.

Four of Rochdale's teams ended up champions. The girls' under 14s football, from St Cuthbert's High School, finished in front.

The girls also triumphed in the 11-15 years judo and under 13 rugby league - won for the fifth consecutive year.
Not to be outdone, the boys' volleyball side from Siddal Moor also claimed gold.

But it was the taking part that really counted, and our lads and lasses certainly did this with some aplomb.

Borough team organiser Andy Green, a member of the sports development team which co-ordinated the event, said: "All those who took part certainly didn't let us down and we are extremely proud of them."
