Albion lose ground in title race
26/ 2/2003
FOOTBALL: THE top four in the Middleton Sunday League saw no change last weekend.
Leaders Crown saw off Old David 5-2. Moore (3), Porter and Brobin netted for Crown who are just about keeping their noses in front of the charging Langley Rangers. Tierney hit both for Old David. Rangers have won their last six. The latest victims were Oddfellows. Dodson (3), Roach (2) and Matthews saw Rangers to a 6-1 win. Brown was the consolation scorer for Oddfellows who have taken only seven of the last 16 points available to them.
Langley Albion lost ground when they were beaten by Pleasant Villa.
Carters had lost only one in six. Their opponents, St Clares, had not won away for four matches, so it was somewhat easy to predict the outcome. Hall bagged a hat-trick as Carters won 4-2. Kelly made up the total. Ward and McCall scored for Clares who have now gone eight games without a win.
Radclyffe Arms are in a rich vein of form. They beat Harbord Harbord 4-1. Crowther (3) and Edwards scored their goals. Smedley got the goal for Harbord who are battling to stay clear of the relegation zone.
The top two in Division One came up against each other. Boat and Horses beat Alkrington Dynamo 1-0. The vital goal came from Charlton. Any of the top four teams could gain promotion. But Boat have won their last nine games and look well in contention.
Royal Oak lost ground in the race when they were beaten 4-1 at home by Boarshaw Hotel who hadn't won for six matches.
Gardeners have started to hit some good form. Goals from Hall (2), Sobieiaj and an opposition defender saw them to a 4-2 away win over Black Bull. S and D Goodyer netted for Bull.
Nolan scored the only goal of the game as Hare and Hounds pipped Old Cock.
Two goals from McDonagh helped New White Lion to a 4-1 win over Hares. Butler and Bennett made up the total. Dyson scored for Hares who dropped to second from bottom of the table.
Railway climbed a couple of places, to ninth, by beating Middleton Wanderers 3-2. Field (2) and Lees were their scorers. Barlow and Parney scored for Wanderers who have won only once in 10 matches.
