GET in line: North get ready to attack
Eady does it for North
29/ 1/2003
NORTH Manchester didn't stand on ceremony when they welcomed Garstang to the Tudor Lodge Ground on Saturday.
It took them only 10 minutes to breach the Garstang try line as John Gaynord touched down for the opening score, although John Eady was off target with the conversion.
The visitors knocked over a penalty soon after to reduce the arrears to two points before the game ebbed and flowed in entertaining fashion.
Minutes before the interval Eady got his sights on target as he slotted over a penalty to put North back in command.
North rang the changes at the break, with centre John Gaynord making way for Dave Garvey to play his first match after injury. Kevin Green replaced Colin Meredith in the second row.
North opened the half with a try from Chris Hyland, set up by the quick hands of substitute Garvey. Eady added two points with an easy kick from in front of the posts.
Garstang enjoyed their best spell in the middle of the second half, but they failed to get on the scoresheet despite two penalty attempts.
North then picked up the pace again when fullback Hyland took the ball from Garvey and ran down the wing to score a magnificent try. It was topped off with a conversion from Eady.
Garstang managed a consolation penalty to make the final result 22-9 in North Manchester's favour.
A trip to Colne and Nelson awaits North this Saturday, followed by the visit of Chorley on 8 February.
