Tony Hill takes one from Trevor Crewe
Junior stars come to town for top contest
19/12/2002
SOME of the country's top amateur boxers descended on Middleton last weekend for the NACYP British Championships which were held at Middleton Civic Centre.
The Class B tournament featured the best 16-year-olds from the four home countries.
It was the first time the prestigious contest had been held outside London, and it was all down to a bid to stage the tournament by Hopwood Hall College's new boxing academy.
l MILES away from Fountain Street, two Collyhurst and Moston fighters were winners on the Frank Warren bill in Newcastle.
Matthew Hall had his second pro contest and beat Birmingham's Pedro Thompson on points over four rounds.
The only real surprise was that Thompson was still standing at the end of the contest after taking some heavy blows.
David Barnes met Rozalin Nasibulin from Novosibirsk.
Barnes suffered a slight cut above an eye, but it didn't stop him as he scored his fifth knockout and the 10th win of his professional career.
