Schoolgirl swimmer is among the best in Europe

18/12/2002

ROCHDALE Aquabears' sensational swimmer Keri-Anne Payne, was in the spotlight again in the European Short Course Championships held in Riesa, Germany.

Following her terrific displays in Melbourne, which were reported on in last week's Guardian Sport, the 15-year-old from Cardinal Langley School finished fifth in the fastest 800 metres freestyle final ever witnessed in Europe.

She touched behind the long course world and European champions, a former short course world champion, and the reigning European short course champion.

Her time of 8 minutes 25.87 seconds would have won her the title in three of the last six European championships.

Those to beat her in Riesa were Eva Risztov of Hungary who set a new European record of 8 minutes 14.72 seconds, Flavia Rigamonti of Switzerland, and Germans Hannah Stockbauer and Jana Henke.
