Vikings vanquished by Roach
13/12/2002
JUNIOR FOOTBALL: Roach Dynamos round-up
Under 8s: ROACH made cup progress with a hard fought 4-1 win over Marauders Vikings. Goals from Matty Bell, Dean Ashton, and Ryan McSweeney put Roach 3-0 up at half time. Nathan Rowlands added another goal before Marauders snatched a consolation. Player of the match was James Steele for a superb unselfish performance at centre forward.
Under 11s: ROACH found themselves involved in a tough cup game against Whitehouse. Michael Chapman scored after 50 seconds when the home keeper failed to hold onto a shot, and six minutes later Chapman made it 2-0 when he lobbed the keeper. Whitehouse pushed players forward in the second half, but this opened the door for Roach, and Andrew Illingworth made it 3-0. Sean Glave was player of the match for his excellent man-marking job.
Under 12s: JORDAN Shaw put Roach in front against Westbury, in a cup tie. Roach increased their lead early in the second half when Ryan Allesandra converted a penalty. Westbury pulled one back from the spot, but the third penalty of the match saw Jordan Shaw make it 3-1. Roach seemed in control, but Westbury grabbed two quick goals to take the game into extra time. Roach applied pressure in the extra spell, but it was Westbury who snatched the winner. John Whitehead was named as the Roach player of the match for a brilliant captain's performance.
Under 14s: ROACH were unlucky to lose to league leaders Belden Red Star. Belden scored an early goal, and they bagged another just before half time, from a freekick awarded for a hotly disputed back-pass. Belden bagged two more in the second half, without reply. Peter Illingworth was named as the Roach player of the match for his solid performance.
Under 15s: ROACH gave a great team display to beat Drinkwater Warriors 5-1. They were 2-1 up at half time and stepped up a gear after the break. Antony Taberner was instrumental in midfield, and defender Wes Taylor proved strong at the back. Player of the match Danny Burns scored two of the goals. Danny Thompson (2) and Simon Chapman were the other scorers.
Under 16s: ROACH should have had the game wrapped up by half time when they led by a goal from Darren Rushton. Stand looked a different team in the second half, and took the lead, but Rushton bagged an equaliser, and almost grabbed a winner. He was named as player of the match for an outstanding performance.
