Middleton schoolgirl smashes British record

11/12/2002

AQUABEAR swimming star Keri-Anne Payne became the fastest 14-year-old in history when she shattered a British record that had stood for 18 years.

Keri-Anne, of Cardinal Langley School, competed in the Melbourne round of the winter World Cup series and clocked 8 minutes 23.58 seconds for the 800 metres freestyle.

She took 4.13 seconds off the previous record which had been set by Sarah Hardcastle in May 1984. Her time would have beaten Hardcastle's world-title winning effort of 1995 by three seconds.

Keri-Anne, who is coached by Dave Crouch, is now a massive 28 seconds faster than her closest age group rival, and she is only two seconds off the senior British record which is held by Commonwealth Games champion Rebecca Cooke.

Inside two weeks Keri-Anne has clipped 17 seconds off her personal best time.

One of those best swims gave her a Northern Counties winter championship in the 800m freestyle. That was a Melbourne warm-up for the champion who celebrated her 15th birthday on Monday.
