Goalball duo take States by storm

ROCHDALE goalball players Emma Jones, of Middleton, and Sally-Anne Jackson have returned triumphant from international duty in the United States.
The girls represented the British Blind Sports junior ladies' team which had been invited to compete in the US Blind Athletes national youth championships held in Florida. They were up against teams from Georgia, Utah, Michigan, Florida, South Carolina, Illinois, and Washington.
The GB girls cruised through their first two pool matches. They crushed Florida 8-1, and Illinois 12-6, with Sally-Anne Jackson claiming a hat-trick, and Emma scoring a debut international goal. GB needed only a draw against Washington to secure a place in the semi-finals. They did much better than that, with an 11-1 win.
The semi-final clash against Michigan was a close and nervy affair. The teams were well matched, and defences were on top form throughout. GB just managed to gain the upper hand to run out 3-1 winners.
GB Met South Carolina in the final, and they were 8-1 up by half time. Play was more even in the second half, but GB always had the edge to run out 9-4 winners.
Unfortunately, only a team from the USA could be awarded the title of US National Champions, and the title went to the well beaten South Carolina team.
