Shield surprise for Dover

27/11/2002

THE Lowther Shield first round games only produced one minor surprise and that was Nelson's 5-3 victory over Dover Castle from the BASSA League Premier Division.

But Dover have only won two games so far this season and are propping up the division.

Blackley Rangers hoped for better things as they travelled to Priory Unicorn but the home team were in top form and sent Rangers home with a 4-1 defeat.

Champions Priory may be struggling in the league but they saw off the cup challenge of Celtic by 5-2.

Vines' tie with Ashley Brook was postponed and will probably be played next week.

In the Premier Division Legs of Man have opened up a four point gap at the top, but they were stunned into life when visitors Premier Autos took an early lead through Carney. Pereira, Jarrett (2) and Nevins soon made inroads into Premier's defence for a 4-1 lead, before Carney notched his second.

Goal scorers for Nelson in the Lowther Shield first round were Bates (2), Fisher, Lister and Scott.

Keeper Dave Bagshaw saved an early penalty awarded to Dover to set Nelson on their way.

In division one, Langworthy lads moved two points clear at the top of the table with a 5-3 win over Lamb Inn. Bottom club Ostrich, who managed to increase the number of goals they have scored all season by 50 per cent (having only scored seven), found Taylors FC in an uncompromising mood and went down 10-4 at home.

Taylors now move to joint second with Ashley Brook.

Meanwhile, on the junior circuit, Moston Brook beat Broadway Colts 5-0.

Jonathan Fogarty was on form again, in this Manchester Mini Soccer League clash, scoring three of the five goals, while Dale Jennings and Mat-thew Woodall got one each.

Brook passed the ball around the pitch giving each player time on the ball and excellent defending from Curtis Jones and Jordan Gerry meant Moston's goalkeeper Jordan Ferns had nothing to do.

Two minutes into the game Fogarty opened his account and on four minutes doubled his tally. Jennings hit home a third and as half time approached Fogarty completed his hat-trick.

In the second half Ferns was given a run up front. Woodall latched on to a throw in, which he smashed in the back of the net to make it 5-0.

It was very difficult to pick a player of the match as it was very much a team effort. Broadway's manager chose Gerry, a Moston Brook defender who kept Colts at bay throughout the game.

Scorers: Jonathan Fogerty (3), Mathew Woodall (1) and Dale Jennings (1).
