Hat-trick double as Boys score cup win

21/11/2002

MIDDLETON Boys under 13s coasted to a 6-2 win over De La Salle in a County Cup second round tie.

The match got off to a brisk start, with Chris Evans opening the scoring after two minutes. He picked up a perfectly timed pass from Darrel Johnson to find the net. Evans bagged his second 10 minutes later, then Johnson moved on to a great through ball from Ben Makove to make it 3-0. De La Salle pulled one back just before half time.

Johnson made it 4-1 on 50 minutes, then Evans completed his hat-trick when he found the roof of the net. De La Salle scored their second before Johnson rounded off the scoring with his hat-trick goal. Chris Evans was named as player of the match for his excellent first half performance.

  • MIDDLETON Boys under 10s played two games against Mossley and won them both. The first game was very even, but Middleton played some good football and won 2-1. Player of the match Kyle McDonough scored both goals. The second game was a different story, with Middleton dominant from the start. Mossley had no answer to Middleton's fast pass and move football. The game finished 7-0 to Middleton. Player of the match Craig Murphy netted two. Zac Ward, James Howarth, and Tyler Waterhouse (3) were the other scorers.
  • De La Salle 5 Middleton Boys 5: THIS under 12s match started at a furious pace. De La Salle took the lead when a punt up field found unmarked left winger Dane who outpaced the Middleton defence to score from an angle. De La Salle scored a second in an identical way. Only then did Middleton wake up. Tom Bradley delivered a cross that caused confusion, and a defender panicked to handball. Sam Freakes hammered home the spot kick.

Middleton thought they were back in the game, but it was just a blip for De La Salle whose captain, Hall, was brought down outside the box. He picked himself up to blast the ball over the wall and high into the net. De La Salle scored again after some woeful marking by Middleton. Another freekick found the net to make it 5-1.

A rousing half time talk was needed to pick Middleton up off the floor. A through ball from Mike Bradley was latched onto by Sam Freakes who brushed aside two challenges to shoot into a corner of the net. Freakes then took a corner that went in at the near post to make it 5-3. Freakes pulled another back with a thunderbolt shot.

Middleton had only minutes to go to round off an unlikely comeback, and it was all out attack. The equaliser came from Curtis Buckley. With seconds to go Jordan Aldcroft had a chance, but a last ditch challenge from a De La Salle defender saved the day for his team. Sam Freakes was named as player of the match.

  • MIDDLETON Boys under 11s made it seven wins in a row in the Salford Sunday League when they thrashed Deans Tigers 10-0 and romped to the top of the table. Four goals by Mike Urquhart, and two from Alex Walker demonstrated Middleton's superiority. Added to that were seasonal firsts from Jordan Hindley and Josh Verity. The Boys' other goals came from James Chapman and Anthony Hoolickin. Player of the match was Mike Urquhart for his four goals and overall contribution.
  • MIDDLETON Boys under 9s were involved in their own 'little derby' against Middleton Boys under 9s second team. The first team won 4-0 and 10-0 in the two matches played. Mason Andrews scored the first, and Dom Murphy headed the ball home to make it 2-0. The first team forced an own goal early in the second half to make it 3-0, and just before the whistle Dom Murphy scored his second of the game to make it 4-0. In the second match the scorers were Mason Andrews (4), Jake Parker, Joe Broadbent, Thomas McCarthy, Ryan Murphy, Thomas Douglas, and Jason Slowe. Player of the match was Joe Broadbent.
  • Middleton Boys 8 Ramsbottom 2: BOYS under 14s kept the pressure on league leaders Beechfield United as they cruised to victory. Joe Louthon opened the scoring when he pounced on a loose ball in the box and smashed it home. Some sloppy defending allowed Ramsbottom an equaliser minutes later. Lee Walker then scored his first goal for Middleton.

Boys made it 3-1 when Kaylum Dillon broke away down the left, cut inside, and found the feet of Ryan Lewis who turned his marker and laid the ball off to scorer Lee Walker. Just before half time Ramsbottom scored again.

In the second half Ryan Lewis produced an excellent show. He smashed a hat-trick in 10 minutes and claimed his 12th goal of the season in eight games. With the score at 6-2 there was no way back for Ramsbottom, and Middleton upped the tempo. Further goals came from David Talmage and Kaylum Dillon. Player of the match was midfield skipper Andrew Walker.
