Unicorn gallop to knockout success
20/11/2002
FOOTBALL: THE BASSA League's Lowther Shield competition got under way last weekend, with preliminary round and first round matches.
Unicorn beat Lamb Inn 2-0 in a prelim tie, but Ostrich, who are struggling at the foot of Division One, were edged 4-3 by Vine.
Three first round ties produced 25 goals. New Broom coasted to a 10-1 win over Premier Autos. Man of the match John Joyce bagged a hat-trick.
Taylors almost caused the upset of the day when they entertained Premier side Legs of Man. The Division One team took the lead through Smith, but they were then hit by a goal rush. Pereira scored the equaliser, then Nevins hit a hat-trick to see Legs into a 4-1 interval lead.
Taylors hit back in style in the second half. Smith pulled a goal back, and Moore could have been the hero. He scored twice, to make the scores level, but also missed a penalty. Legs got out of jail with a late winner from Garret.
White Lion strolled to a 4-2 win over Langworthy Cars.
Priory's Manchester County Shield away tie, against Trafford Hawks, was called off for the third time even though the game had been switched to Hawks' ground.
Dover Castle went out of the Manchester County Cup, beaten 3-1 at Acres.
