Top places for karate stars

TWO BUDDING karate stars captured first places in this month's BKA Open Karate Championships.

Caron Leach, aged 11, and nine-year old Mandy Healey train at Middleton Karate Club, Springfield Mill.

They travelled to Blackpool to compete in the tournament, and both won their Kata categories.

Under the tuition of chief instructor Stephen Leach, and Sensei Billy Higgins, Caron won the final of the 10 to 15 age group.

Mandy overcame allcomers to take the under 9s title.

Anyone wishing to join Middleton Karate Club can turn up at the mill, on the corner of Long Street, for beginners' classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings. More advanced classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
