Thai boxer impresses the masters

THAI boxer Steve Donnelly believes he is better equipped than ever after returning from a trip to Thailand.

The 24-year-old, of Colindale Avenue, Blackley, spent two weeks in the country where the sport originated, to pick up a few tips from the masters.

He said: "I really didn't know what to expect before I went out there, but I was buzzing all the way."

Steve, who is a lifeguard at Middleton Leisure Centre, visited several gyms, including the famed Sityodtong Gym, during his stay, and he managed to see some of the sport's leading figures in action.

"Even the young kids were class," he said. "Everyone who takes part has been doing it forever."

He also feels the experience has improved his all-round game following a number of tuition, sparring, and training sessions.

He added: "I have brought a lot back with me. They might just be the little things, but I'm sure they will help me with my overall game."

Steve, who fight for Pele's Gym in Altrincham, has been invited back to Thailand next year, after impressing local trainer Pimu.

"I'm definitely going back," he said. "He said he would like me to go for a month, to train, because he believes I can turn into a very good fighter, which was a big confidence boost."

Steve will be in action at Altrincham Leisure Centre, for the Beast Masters promotion, on 10 November. Tickets are available from Pele's Gym on 0161 924 0137.
