Thornham seconds celebrate success

25/ 9/2002

THORNHAM CC seconds continued to re-write the record books in the J W Lees Lancashire County League.

They won the Division Two title for the fourth time in the League's nine year history.

Thornham's achievement this year was based on the pin-point accuracy of their bowling attack, backed up by their trade mark solid batting.

On the bowling front, Ian Heywood, who returned after overcoming a serious knee injury, led the way with a new team record of 76 wickets.

He was ably supported by the experienced new boy Andy Holmes, and the ever dependable Jim Clarke, with veteran all rounder Alan Whiston providing a more than useful slow bowling option.

The bulk of the team's runs came from regular No 3 Tim Walsh, and the reliable opening pair of skipper Dave Harrop and Jim Carnegie.

They regularly laid the foundations on which the talented and attacking left-handed trio of Kevin McMahon, Mike Lee, and James Burke, together with youngster Lewis Hughes, in his first senior season at the club, built match winning scores.

With wicket-keepers Gareth Hunt and Chris McGrath both performing at a consistently high level, Thornham proved far too strong for their opponents, and thoroughly deserved their success.
