Crown on the rise as Clares suffer a drop
25/ 9/2002
CROWN climbed above St Clare's, in the Middleton Sunday League's Invincible Double Glazing Premier Division, into fifth place after winning 3-0 at home to Harbord/Harbord. Hall, Porter and Brobbin were on target for Crown.
St Clare's dropped to seventh spot after a disastrous 8-2 hammering from Alliance. What made it all the more remarkable was that Alliance had not won a game this season. here were hat-tricks for Travis and Duffy. Seel and O'Hanlon added the others. Popielek and Birchenhoff bagged Clare's consolations.
Carters Arms, who started off so well, have now faded. They won their first two games but have lost their last two.
On Sunday they went down 2-1 at home to Old David. Strikes from Lyons and Crawley gave Old David their first win of the season.
Alkrington Dynamos, leaders of the First Division, had played four and won four, scoring a record number of goals. When they took on bottom placed Railway, at home, a cricket score was expected. But they went down to a shock 2-1 defeat. A strike from Bowker, and an own goal, cancelled out Jones' single. This result lifted Railway off the bottom.
Unbeaten Nimble Nook stay second. They inflicted a first defeat on Hare and Hounds. Goals from Holt, Scanlon, and Charlenson gave Nook a 3-0 win.
Hares had the best score of the day. They beat Old Cock 7-0 to record their first win of the season. On the scoresheet for Hares were Worsley (3), Kilroy (3), and Jowett.
Gardeners Arms beat New White Lion in a game described by referee Peter Johnson as a 'cracker'. Sherwood, Morris, and Howard got one each for Gardeners, with Butler and Bennett replying for Lion.
A brace from Lord gave Royal Oak their first away win of the season. Oak beat Boarshaw Hotel 2-0.
