Football official hits out over pitches

4/ 9/2002

DAVE Whelan, an official of the new BASSA Football League, formed by the merger of the Blackley and Salford League's, has invited local councillors to view the poor state of football pitches in the area.

The season is in its infancy, but already there appears to be problems.

Mr Whelan claimed that teams arriving for matches last weekend were met by barren goalmouths completely lacking of grass, goal-posts and crossbars at rickety angles, and grass of varying length on other parts of the pitch.

Mr Whelan said: "Promises made in the summer, for better servicing of football pitches, seem to have been no more than empty words. This is the third year running that summer maintenance work on pitches seems to have been poor or non existent.

"I was told at one pitch that the grass seed had not taken, but does it take from the end of June to late August to discover this? Every year the cost of pitch hire goes up. And every year the service seems to go down.

"I implore local councillors to look at Broadhurst Park, Plant Hill, Smedley, and Hazelbottom Road football pitches and then ask what has been done for our money."
