Hill on the right road for convincing win

25/ 7/2002

BOWLS: A 21-6 win from Ernie Faulkner, and a 21-5 win from Dave Gibbons helped Cheetham Hill CC A to overcome Rhodes A 207-133 for a 15-2 points win in the Middleton Bowling League.

HBRBL continued to dominate the A Division. They opened up a 50 points lead thanks to a 12-4 win at Tonge. Not even a 21-2 win from Steve Copeland could stop the leaders taking the aggregate 173-170, to add the three points to the nine gained with six individual wins.

Broadway also had a 12-4 away win, at Chadderton Fold. John Irons junior scored a 21-0 win to help Broadway to a 171-157 aggregate success.

Darren Wardle of Brassey BC, maintained his 100 per cent record with a 21-17 win at Prestwich BC.

In the B Division, all four home teams had 8-7.5 wins. St Thomas More's eight points enabled them to stay second behind The Clough who didn't play this week. A 21-3 win from Embassy's Alan Dale could not prevent his team losing the aggregate by six chalks, 166-160, as the second placed team collected the three extra points.

In the C Division match at Cheetham Hill, between the leaders and Middleton Cons B, the two 100 per cent records in this division were on the line. Ronnie Baines (CHCC), and Frank Mitchell (Mid Cons) had 21-4 and 21-17 wins to maintain their records. The 10 points from this home win moved Cheetham Hill 6.5 points clear of Tonge B.

Two B Division clubs overcame A Division opposition to reach the Inter-divisional Cup semi-finals. Last year's runners-up The Clough beat Cheetham Hill A 188-173, with Bernard Lewis's 21-5 the best.

Millbeck had a seven chalks win over HBCC. The 54 chalks handicap, and four individual wins, the best being 21-13's from Jimmy Burns and Kevin Horner, enabled the Middleton team to overcome their A Division opponents.
