Record breaker

24/ 7/2002

ERIC Price, the Middleton left arm spin bowler, who has died at the age of 83, has his own place in the CLL record books.

On 26 April 1952 he returned the astonishing figures of 10 for four, off 8.7 overs, with five maidens, against Littleborough, at Hare Hill, in a bowling feat which will probably never be matched.

The following week, he finished with none for 95 against Radcliffe, at Towncroft, when Frank Worrell (152 not out) and Bill Greenhalgh (144 not out) put on 303 unbroken for the first wicket.

Eric began his career with Middleton in the 1940s and then spent 12 months at Old Trafford before joining Essex.

Eric returned to Middleton as skipper in the early 1950s, and in 1955 he took 134 wickets, a record by a Middleton amateur. He joined Thornham in the mid 1960s, for a couple of seasons, before he finally hung up his spikes.

He died on 13 July in hospital, and his funeral was last Friday.
