Girls make boys fight all the way

17/ 7/2002

FOOTBALL: IT was a soccer battle of the sexes when St Vincent's RC Primary School boys took on Hopwood Ladies under-11s in Norden.

Strength told in the end as St Vincent's emerged victorious, although the boys had to come from behind to edge a 3-2 win in a match played at a furious pace.

Hopwood had taken the lead midway through the first half, only for an own goal to make the scores level at half-time.

Two quick strikes put the boys 3-1 ahead in the second half, although the girls, many of whom go to St Vincent's school, showed their fighting spirit by getting their second goal late in the game. The Ladies pressed for an equaliser, but the boys held on for a hard-fought victory.

Hopwood, who won two knock-out trophies and finished runners-up in the Tameside & District Junior Football League Under-11s Division last season, had the player-of-the-match in goalkeeper Shauna Thornhill who made a series of outstanding saves.
