Cream teas, but no cricket

10/ 7/2002

MOSTON Cricket Club, without a home venue due to their wicket at Manchester University being used for the Commonwealth Games, travelled to the home of Manchester Post Office, in Wythenshawe, to play local rivals Blackley, and left without a delivery being bowled.

Upon arrival at the ground, Moston were confronted with a locked venue. Confusion reigned. After a heated debate, the umpire agreed that the fixture could take place, after all efforts to contact league officials and the groundsman had failed.

With the pitch ready, and the toss taken, as if from nowhere the groundsman appeared and promptly uprooted the stumps! He had not been informed of the fixture and was not going to let the match take place under any circumstances.

Amid chaotic scenes, the umpire left the ground and both teams were left to eat the cream teas provided by Pat Wilkinson, who makes exceedingly good cakes!

Moston hope that, due to the controversial circumstances, the fixture will be re-arranged, as victory would have seen them close to within ten points of leaders Haughton Green.
