Hill of a match at Prestwich

26/ 6/2002

WHO says cricket isn't an exciting game? Not those spectators or players at Prestwich on Saturday who saw nearly 500 runs scored in a day, and victory secured from the last ball of the match.

Cheetham Hill won the toss and made 242 in their 50 overs. Brad Flegg top scored with 88, and he was well supported by Atif Riaz (35), Murad Barkatali (33), Kamran Ditta (22), and Gary Stanton (14). The pick of the Prestwich bowlers was Andy Taylor, who returned four for 73. He received good backing from Chris Humphreys with three for 57.

Prestwich never looked like being in the race when they were 135 for six, despite a battling 81 by captain Steve Orrell But the sustained big hitting of the Prestwich lower order in the gathering gloom, allowed them to win off the last ball at 8 55pm. Despite losing the Cheetham Hill team agreed it was the best game of the season so far.

On Sunday a depleted Cheetham Hill faced champions Dukinfield. Hill batted first and were bowled out for 68. They didn't give up, and the opposition lost five wickets in achieving the win.

Cheetham Hill seconds were weakened on both days, but they put up a good display on Saturday. They scored 168 against current league leaders Prestwich who lost seven wickets on the way to victory.
