Boys oh boys, what a night

MIDDLETON Boys FC's annual presentation night was held at Middleton Civic Hall, and was, as usual, a superb night, with every player from every team receiving a trophy.

Brian Kidd gave out more than 200 trophies. The Leeds United Assistant Manager is a big fan of Middleton footballers after coaching local boy Paul Scholes all the way to the England team.

The team's ages range from under 7s up to under 16s. The seven-year-olds were only just about big enough to get on the stage, but how they loved the limelight and the chance to shake the hand of the former Manchester United and City player.

After all the squad trophies, came the trophies won by Boys in their individual leagues. All the teams had a good season. The under 8s were runners up in the league, the under 9s finished third, the under 10s were cup finalists, and the under 12s were league winners.

The under 16s pushed all the way to the last four games of the season before falling away.

Lastly came the individual trophies for the 'outstanding' players of the teams. There were, of course, many thanks from all the boys to the team bosses, and some fantastic presents and mementoes.

It was a great night, but also a sad night for the hard working 'Boss of Bosses', the Godfather of Middleton Boys Football Club, Steve Epstein. Six years ago he started an under 10s team. Now, at under 16s, the young men fly the coop into open age football. But not before they all fly off to Spain for their last end of season trip as part of Middleton Boys Junior Football Club.
