Boys go so close
30/ 5/2002
FOOTBALL: IT WAS a case of if only for Middleton Boys under 10s as they just failed to make the final stages of the Reddish tournament.
Middleton got off to a slow start. They dominated their first two games against Denton Villa and Signol, but the games finished scoreless.
They then met Reddish Villa and took the lead when a deflected shot from Anthony Parfitt fell to Anthony Hoolickin who fired home. This settled Boys down' and Mike Urquhart laid on a goal form Sam Freakes after his own effort had been blocked.
Two more goal-less draws meant that Middleton's last game, against the unbeaten Reddish Rangers was a must win. Rangers only needed a draw to go through on goal difference. Middleton took the game to Reddish, with Kieran McCarthy and Parfitt bossing the midfield, but they were caught on the break and went 1-0 down. This was the first goal conceded by Boys in the tournament, and they needed to dig deep. Freakes provided the inspiration when he rounded two defenders then unleashed a venomous 20-yards drive to level the scores.
With seconds to go a long ball into the Reddish box caused mayhem, but Middleton were unable to find the killer touch. Reddish went on to win the final, while Middleton were left to rue a multitude of missed chances.
