Schools rugby is alive and kicking

30/ 5/2002

RUGBY league is alive and kicking in two Alkrington Primary schools.

And to celebrate, pupils from St Thomas Moor RC Primary school, Evesham Road, and St Michael's Primary, Boardman Fold got together for a rugby festival. Both schools have been involved in coaching sessions with John McHale and Alan Osbaldeston, and this event was an opportunity to put those skills into practise in a team situation.

Five teams in all took part, three from St Michael's and two from St Thomas', under the watchful eye of their coaches.

Also there to lend a hand were Rochdale Hornets' New Zealand scrum half Latham Tawhai, and Rochdale rugby league service area co-ordinator Carl Richards. Everybody who took part voted the day a huge success.

"It was very enjoyable," said Mr McHale. "The pupils have add the opportunity to try out what they have learned. And the feedback from teachers and children has been very positive."
