Gomez set to become trainer

SUPER-featherweight Michael Gomez could take over as chief trainer at the Collyhurst and Moston Boys Club gym.

Current chief trainer Brian Hughes has been looking to take a back seat and believes Gomez could be the man to take over. The 24-year-old, who fights Kevin Flear for the WBU super-featherweight title on Saturday, is working towards getting a first aid certificate before approaching the boxing board about becoming a trainer.

Hughes said: "He wants to become a trainer, and I'm delighted. I've told him he can take over because I don't want to be going into the club every day. I've done it for 40-odd years, and when you do something like that, you've got to give it 100 per cent. But I want to do other things with my life now, like visiting different cities with my wife and seeing things.

"Michael's definitely got the personality for the job and, above that, he's a wonderful teacher. He's been helping out with the kids and now he's gone on a first aid course. He needs a first aid certificate then he can go before the boxing board to see if he can become a trainer."

He added: "He has a lot of experience in the sport because he's 24 now and has been boxing since he was eight or nine. With him already being a professional boxer, and a champion, that will stand him in good stead as a trainer."

Hughes stated his intention to encourage Gomez to go into the corners for stablemates' fights, saying: "He wouldn't be able to do it on a night when he was fighting because he would need to be totally focused for that. But we'll be showing him the ropes when others are fighting."
